i've failed in my resolution #2009.01....haven't touched xanga since my new resolution. does anyone else feel like it's a chore to update xanga, facebook, email, etc? and i don't even have any kids to deal with!

i spent the weekend with sam, jenny, my sister julie and her bf brendan, and most importantly, my new niece, Madeleine! i swear she is the most adorable baby in the world. she has lashes to die for, and is cute whether she's sleeping, eating, or even crying. can't wait to see her again! here are some pics:

Thanks for everyone's encouragement. Work has been much better this past week! I think it's going to pick back up again next week - but I think God heard my cries and provided me a little time to recoup and rest.

Anyway, onto my blur or blurbs....

My weird kitty Tarzan who likes to sleep on his back. What a nut.

I love my new coffee mug. We brew DD coffee every morning and I drink it on my drive to work (one of the favorite parts of my day). I recently bought a new coffee mug at Target. Less than a week later, I heard some rattling inside and realized that a piece must have broken inside the shell. The tag says "lifetime warranty" - so I called the manufactor's customer service line and explained what was wrong. No questions, no hassle - they just shipped me a new mug! I didn't even need to return the defective one. It's not really even defective - still works fine, just has the annoying rattle when it's empty. So now I have two mugs! Great customer service and great mug - I highly recommend this if you're in the market for a new mug.

The North Carolina State Fair is held in Raleigh every October. We went one evening with Bret and Rachel Horton and had a blast pigging out and looking at weird animals and abnormally ginormous produce. Here's a list of the food we ate: Corn on the cob, Italian Sausage, French Fries, Funnel Cake, Foot-long Corn Dog, Ice Cream, and Caramel Apple. Ooooh-weeee! Only at the State Fair can you indulge in such gluttony and not feel too guilty (cause the masses all around you are doing the same thing!)

We had a sleepover with the Ickes a couple weekends ago. They came out to Durham and stayed over our house :) In the morning we made a big breakfast to celebrate Jane's birthday (happy birthday again!) After stuffing ourselves, we took a short hike through a nature trial in our neighborhood. The fall colors and nice weather (not to mention the awesome company) made for one nice hike.

Early birds. There have been a few weekends where Bobby and I have got up early and enjoyed some early morning relaxation with our coffee and our cats.

Last Saturday we did some yard work. Well...Bobby did some yard work, and I helped as best as I could. We got into a little tiff...but that's for another day's entry. At the end we were all good, and our yard looked great.

"Did Lois and Bobby get a pickup truck now that they live in the South?" - you may have wondered from the picture above. The answer is No, although I can see how useful they can be. Won-Jung and Davin were nice enough to lend us their truck. We returned the truck later that day and stayed to hang out and have an awesome dinner of burgers and beer. I feel bad b/c I was so busy taking pictures of the food that I forgot to take pictures of our friends! Hmm, well, you can kind of see Zoe behind the apple pie. Oh, and that's Davin's hands in the picture, too.

Wow, and if you made it this far, thanks for reading my blurbs! Here's your reward - a picture of the pumpkin Bobby carved this year for Halloween sitting on our front porch. Am I wrong when I say that you can't help but smile when you look at this picture?!?

ever since the markets took a turn for the worse, my already busy work life became even busier. the last few weeks i've been working late, traveling all over the state, and just barely keeping up. there just don't seem to be enough hours in a day to get it all done. i hate being stressed beause of work. i just keep telling myself that it's temporary, and that once the markets settle (whenever that is) things will quiet down. times like this make me wonder what it'll be like once we have kids. will it be possible to balance work life and personal life. anyway, i certainly don't think i could have been able to manage having a kid right now. gosh, i've barely given bobby the attention he deserves!

i've also been mia from the world of xanga and personal email. the only reason i can check facebook is b/c of my iphone app - but that's mostly checking status updates and such. but i'll see if i can't be better about updating and keeping up with you all. i feel sad that i missed jamie's entry and didn't get to participate in the "what should she do with the anticipated bday money?" question. (jamie, glad you got lots of feedbackand made a decision you were happy with.)

anyway, i should be thankful that despite my feeling a little overwhelmed, if i stop and think about the past couple months, i can see how God has blessed me with times of rest and fellowship with others. these are things i take for granted, but i'm sure they have played a critical role in keeping me going. bobby, as always, has been very encouraging and supportive. and i am still really happy at our church and the wonderful relationships that are slowing growing into deeper friendships.

back in september, bobby's brother jimmy visited for his annual "relax in north carolina week." it was real fun hanging out with him, and i'm sad we didn't take more pictures. below are just a couple - the first is when he and bobby went golfing. the second is us showing off all the tickets we won at Frankie's (sort of like a Jillians or Dave & Busters). oh, and jimmy recently got engaged! (congrats jimmy!) and, he's moving to san francisco! this will give us a great reason to visit sf. (ann, maybe we'll get to meet toni sooner rather than later!)

food is always something that makes me happy - and this chili made me very happy. jane and scott ickes had us over for dinner a few weeks ago and served us this homeade chili with cornbread and collard greens. doesn't it look so yummy?

working a lot has meant that i haven't had much time or energy to cook. sometimes we just heat up leftovers or cook "bad" food from the freezer. the other week, we did just that - leftover pasta with frozen french fries and buffalo wings. i found these neat school lunch trays on sale at target and couldn't resist buying them - and they were so perfect for us to use for our ghetto meal!

finally - back in early september, we did manage to spend a saturday doing some house stuff, which included re-painting our dining room a nice deep red. look at me, working hard, while my cat tarzan spent most of the time just looking out the window, daydreaming away.

random entry

now that i have finally joined the dark side (i.e. facebook) i definitely find it harder to update my xanga. but i decided i'm going to try - and not just update pictures, but try and do more "blogging." being married to bobby has made me realize how much of an internal thinker i am. it would frustrate him to no end, because if i was upset or sad, my tendency is to retreat and process things in my head, and then resurface later once i was "okay." and for real, that's how i deal with things - and i swear i'm not repressing my emotions (i think). but poor bobby, he likes to talk things out and process things out loud. i'm not the best partner for doing that, and while i can go off on my own for a little bit and return feeling like things are all better, in the meantime i've left bobby alone with no one to process with and probably feeling worse that before. but surely God's using us to grow and encourage each other. i've become much better at talking things out, and bobby's getting better at being patient with and understanding the way i process things (and vice versa). man, if i married an internal processor, we'd never talk things out - how boring. and if bobby married someone like him, there'd probably be too much talking and not enough resolving! it's so neat to think about how God uses our differences to make both of us better.

true to the entry's title, moving on...i love how people express themselves down in the South. my favorite one so far: "to love on [someone]" people in my church community use it a lot. it's a way of expressing active encouragement, support, love, etc. i think people in my church are pretty good at living this phrase out. do you know someone who needs to be "loved on" today, and what would it look like to "love on" that particular person?

next random topic: my nomination for cutest baby cheeks goes to....(drumroll)....caleb chung!

he may look like his daddy, but richard doesn't even come close to his little boy's awesome cheeks.

moving on....I LOVE RITA'S WATER ICE and i'm soooooo happy they have come to north carolina!!! and since the winters here ain't so harsh, i think they'll be open year-round. yay!

look how much my kittens have grown! (i know they're not still kittens, but that's how i will always see them.) i was telling bobby the other day that i love each of them so much and they have such unique personalities, that if i was to ever lose them, i don't think i could get new ones. tarzan, the one with stripes, is almost like a dog because he follows you around everywhere, likes to get attention, and sleeps on his back. rocky, the one below, is so shy and skittish but really just wants you to love him and comes up to me meowing when he wants me to hold him and rub his belly. not to mention that both of them come when i call their names and they sit by our bedroom door every morning waiting for us to come out. plus, we've trained them to sit and wait for a signal before they are allowed to eat from their bowls. i know i'm biased, but i think these are very special kitties.

finally...i've noticed that for the last few posts, i haven't included any pictures of bobby. i swear, i love him, i do! so here's my token shot of my husband, taken in the hotel room at the bellagio hotel in las vegas after our week-long camping trip out west. the hotel room was soooo luxurious - our little treat to ourselves after roughing it all week. this is bobby posing in the ginormous closet that was part of the TV console. for some reason, i can't help but sing the tune, "secret...asian man!" (or is it "secret....agent man?")

hmm...ok, mostly pictures and not so much blogging today...but i'll work on it...give me time.

eula's visit, plus some oldies but goodies

i have been so swamped at work! going on vacation is great, but it does have its consequences. i haven't had much time to check xanga or sign up for facebook (i think i am the last person on earth not to have joined). but i wanted to say hello and share some pics.

1) so back in the spring i decided i wanted to get an iphone, but a friend told me that he'd heard a rumor about a NEW iphone coming out in the summer. i decided to wait, and took the $ i was going to spend and tucked it away in my savings account. by golly, my friend was right! my patience was rewarded. and i was fortunate to be able to get an iphone the first day it came out, and i LOVE LOVE LOVE it. now i can keep up with my email while at work - even if i can't reply, at least i know what's going on and it doesn't feel like such a chore to go home and check email after work. i know there are lots of other cool things you can do with an iphone, but i haven't figured it out yet. just love that i have access to personal email while at work.

2) our friend, nate, who we went camping with, posted pictures from our trip on his website. if you like the pictures i posted last time, you should totally check them out. his pictures are AMAZING. he's a professional, so it's a real treat to have access to his shots. go visit his page here

3) this weekend our friend eula is visiting nc for a last minute trip! we're very excited. can't wait to see you eula!

so here are some pics from caleb chung's 100 day celebration. he is such a CHILL baby. look at him, just staring at harold who's trying to be animated and take his picture. and, of course, what's a 100 day celebration without lots of delish korean food?

these are our friends scott and jane, who are getting married in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS! this was at a jack and jill shower for them. instead of creating a ribbon bouquet, scott decided to take some of the rafia and make a "ribbon" tie.

we also recently got a new desktop computer and bobby was diligent in aggregating all our old pictures onto the new drive. i came upon these pictures from one of our first dates. strawberries and cream on a ferry boat - ahh, romantic. ain't we just bee-you-teeth-ful? i think we really are meant to be together.

our trip out west

it's been about a week and a half since we've come back from our big camping trip out west. it was arguably one of the best vacations i've been on, for a variety of reasons. first, the amazing sights - i've never been to the places we visited, and there were some awesome sights to take in. God and His Creation just hits you in the heart. we tried to capture what we could with our camera, but i think nothing will replace experiencing it in person, with all of your senses taking in the sounds, smells, and textures.

i also love spending time with our good friends Rebecca and Nathan Clendenin. They are friends from church, and they are actually moving very soon to South Africa for one year to work with a new Christian-based non-profit called Africa Revolution. (Learn more about their story on their blog, and about Africa Revolution here.) We felt very lucky to be able to spend this time with them before they went abroad. God blessed us with a a great week of laughs, wonders, and good communication.

What I also loved about this vacation was how it was structured, but totally not structured. We knew each of the places we were visiting and where we'd be camping on a particular night (much thanks to Rebecca for organizing most of that) but day to day, it was sort of go with the flow. We got to see a lot of different things, but never felt rushed or like we needed to move on to the next thing. Best of all, Nathan is a photographer by trade, and you all know bobby and i love to take pictures with our little point and shoot - so everywhere we went, all four of us spent time taking picture after picture.

Camping was really fun - though i can't say we were really roughing it too much. It was basically car camping, since we could drive up to each campsite we stayed at. But we carried everything we needed for the trip in a big pack, including tents, gear, and clothes. We did many meals at the campsite (like coffee, instant grits, hot dogs, etc.) but also ate out a number of times, primarily when we travelled between places.

All in all, it was 8 days and 7 nights. We flew out of Raleigh and into Las Vegas - picked up a rental car (which we named "Del Inferno" - a jet black Dodge Charger), and drove out to our first destination: The Grand Canyon.

If you ever visit the Grand Canyon, I highly recommend the North Rim, as opposed to the South Rim. Apparently the South Rim is much more touristy. The North Rim was so very peaceful and beautiful - and not at all crazy, even considering it was nearing July 4th weekend.

After the Grand Canyon, our next stop was Lower Antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona. This was by FAR our FAVORITE place, hands down. These canyons are underground have been carved by flood waters that come down a few times a year. At certain points the canyon is just a few feet wide. The top of the canyon only lets in so much sunlight, so that it's nice and cool down below, and the colors from the sun change the canyon walls as you walk through and as the sun moves. SO AMAZING.

We also went to Lake Powell and camped there one night. It's a man-made lake in the Glen Canyon area. It was ok - but probably the least favorite of the trip. We took a dip in the lake, which was fun (nice and cold - snowtop run-off and part of the colorado river). But the highlight of that night was the awesome dinner. We grilled bacon, and omg, it was the best bacon i've ever eaten. We ate that with hot dogs, made mac and cheese, and also baked potatoes in the fire. YUM.

Next was Bryce Canyon - very different landscape from the Grand Canyon. It's a different erosion process, primarily from freezing and thawing rainwater, which creates very interesting canyon walls.

Finally, we spent two nights at Zion National Park. Another amazing place with sights i've never seen before. Our favorite part was hiking through "the Narrows", which is the part of the park where the canyon begins to narrow and you have to hike through the Virgin River. It was so neat!

We spent the last night in Las Vegas. It was nice to take a real shower and sleep in a comfy bed - but to be honest, it was just "ok" compared to the wonderful week we spent "out" in the canyons. bobby and i can't wait to go back again someday.

how did those months pass so quickly?

after my exam, bobby and i finally felt like we could begin our year. but, as we recounted our year thus far, we realized that God had blessed us with lots of fun times during the first half of the year, including visits from bobby's mom and friends from baltimore (the woos and the kims), not to mention tons of good news via babies and other things. sadly, we didn't take enough pictures to catch everything. but here's a taste of our goings on over the last couple months:

my basil and cilantro are all growns up! my jalapeno plant is also growing well.

i would often procrastinate by staring into our backyard and trying to catch a pic of visiting birds.

bobby's mom came from california and stayed with us for a week in early may.
here we are at the farmer's market, buying some flowers.

memorial day weekend, the woos and the kims came down from baltimore!

after the exam, we spent 5 days in boston, our old stomping grounds! we got to see sam/jenny plus all our other friends and some new babies, too. again, no pictures of them. what were we thinking? (i have to give a shout-out to jamie and lester for taking us in for most of our stay - thanks so much!)

and lastly...back in april we went to a cook-out for a chuch friend's bday. i took this picture trying to capture the party in the park...but afterwards, i realized i took a picture of a WEIRD looking tree! look at its face, like it's saying "ooooh!" hee hee, i can't help but crack up everytime i see this picture.

getting back into life

so the exam i've been studying for all year has finally come and gone. the last few weeks until the exam, my life was basically work, study, eat, and sleep. (note: bobby was not part of that cycle) poor husband, completely ignored and neglected. fortunately, he had basketball playoffs to occupy a chunk of his time.

the exam was really really tough. seriously. i'm operating under the assumption that i did not pass. (i'll find out in August.) at first it was really depressing - gosh, all that time wasted, only to have to do it again next year! but now i'm ok with it - whether or not i passed, i learned a lot and i will just leave the rest up to God.

it's also a huge relief that i no longer have an excuse to be so selfish. i was soooo selfish with my time. i could feel the self-absorbtion seeping into my heart and taking over my life. just because of an exam! i should consider it a luxury to be able to studying during this time in my life when i have the freedom to do so. sorry - i don't mean to make such a big deal out of this exam, but it seriously took over my life, and i'm so happy it's over! (for now, anyway)

a few days after the exam, bobby and i went up to boston and had a blast hanging out with friends and re-exploring the city. got back early this week only to be slammed at work - but the trip was worth it!

anyway, now i'm slowly getting back to my prior life. i have a couple hundred emails i need to go through. lots of cleaning to do. catching up on work, friends, and church. and of course back to xanga - catching up on others' posts, and also i have so many pictures to post from the last couple months! this is on my "to-do" list for this weekend.

oh, and in a couple weeks, bobby and i are heading out west with a couple friends for a week of camping in the Grand Canyon and surrounding areas. we're very very excited! here are some pictures of one place we plan to hike to - Antelope Canyon in Paige, Arizona. can't wait.
